If you donít see a particular package that you look for, please click here to see all the list of all packages. When the web page appears, look for the "Download" menu at the top row, then click on it and select menu "Browse All Packages".† Then click on the link "WinVNKey Official Releases".
Download the zip file of interest, unzip it, then right click on the file
setup.exe and choose menu "Run as administrator" to install.† The WinVNKey
∑ Windows Installer 3.1
∑ .NET Framework 3.5
If your Vista/2008 system does not have any of these packages, WinVNKey setup will ask you for permission to download and install.† Of course you should answer "yes" to install these missing packages.† But the install process will fail later because you have no write permission in system folders.† To avoid this and save time, you should follow these steps:
∑ Answer no to cancel the current installation process
∑ Turn off UAC (User Account Control) so that you can write in system folders:
o Start | "Control Panel" | "User Accounts and Family Safety" | "User Accounts" | "Turn User Account Control on or off" | Uncheck checkbox "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer"
o Click OK and restart your
∑ Now repeat the installation process:
o Right click on setup.exe choose menu "Run as administrator" to install.†
o If asked for permission to install Windows 3.1 or .NET Framework 3.5, answer yes to proceed.
o After installation is completed, you can turn on UAC to protect your computer because WinVNKey can work well even with UAC enabled.
All packages 3, 4, 5 are functionally equivalent.† All packages 6, 7, 8 are functionally
equivalent.† Thus you should download
only one package.† Normally, you should
download an exe package because it supports automatic installation.
However, the automatic installation sometimes fails on certain Windows XP or
Once installation is complete, you can run WinVNKey and browse the installation directory:
WinVNKey | Run | Open folder | WinVNKey Install Folder
This will bring up Windows Explorer with the right panel showing the installation directory. If you install package 1, 3, 4, or 5, you will see a HanNom folder, which contains all Han/Nom databases and subfolders. If you install package 2, 6, 7, or 8, you will not see a HanNom folder. That's the only difference between these packages.
If you install package 2, 6, 7, or 8, and later want Han/Nom support, all you need to do is copy the entire HanNom folder from another installation that has Han/Nom support (i.e., copy from another computer). Or you can download package 1, 3, 4, or 5 and install on top of the current installation.
In general WinVNKey works well in all applications (MS Office, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, pidyin, etc) on all platforms (
Vista, Windows 2008, Windows 7, XP, Windows 2000, NT).† The notorious DEP bug has been completely fixed so there is no need to turn off UAC (User Account Control) or Protected Mode in Internet Explorer.†
∑ Fixed accidental upper case in MS Word.
∑ Fixed RTF conversion of ư for TCVN-3 in Word 2007.
∑ Fixed memory violation when updating certain HanNom databases
∑ Fixed hot keys for language macros
∑ Fixed combining engine for Vietnamese, macros, Han/Nom in Internet Explorer (IE) in
Vistabecause by default IE does not support shared memory for security reasons.
∑ Fixed a number of other errors.
∑ Enhance plain text conversion (select source charset #100 and click on the destination charset combobox arrow to see all new options):
- Support conversion from Traditional Chinese to Simplified Chinese and vice versa
- Support collecting Han/Nom statistics on Han/Nom text files.
∑ Enhance menu "Update Han/Nom database":
- Allow users to hide Han/Nom databases that they do not use.
- Allow users to extract data from Unihan.txt (released by Unicode Consortium) based on a particular keyword.† The output can then be integrated into existing or new Han/Nom databases that can be understood by WinVNKey.
∑ New Han/Nom database updates from Le Thanh Son.
∑ Support typing ye^nh and tuy'p as if they were valid Vietnamese.
∑ Support conversion of plain text from Telex or VNI conventions to any character set and vice versa. See source charsets #47 and #48 in Plain Text conversion.
∑ Support conversion of plain text by automatically retyping source text based on typing method and Viet option page and macros. Choose source charsets #200 or more and click on the "?" button to see explanation and examples.
∑ Make all features of plain text conversion available through menu: press and release CTRL twice, then press right mouse to display the conversion menu. The set up of source and destination character sets is done in menu C.
∑ Enhance Unicode Typepad to support Planes 1, 2, 3, 15 and fast scrolling.
[x] Run this program in Compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2).
∑ Or open Control panel / User Accounts and Family Safety / User Acounts / Turn User Account Control On or Off / Then uncheck the box: Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer.
∑ If WinVNKey does not work in Internet Explorer, turn off Protected Mode in Internet Explorer: ††Tools / Internet Options / Security.† Then uncheck the box for "Enable Protected Mode" and restart Internet Explorer.
